B.C. Economic Growth Picks Up in Summer 2026

by Florencio Jr Mende

B.C.’s economy showed signs of stronger growth through the summer, with the latest BCREA Nowcast pointing to continued improvement in provincial economic activity.

The BCREA Nowcast estimates that B.C.’s real GDP grew 2.2 per cent year over year in July 2026. This marked the first time the Nowcast had recorded annual growth above 2 per cent since January 2025. By comparison, Canada’s economy grew by 1.4 per cent over the same period.

Early estimates for August suggest that B.C.’s economic growth strengthened slightly further, reaching 2.3 per cent year over year, while Canadian growth increased to 1.7 per cent.

Growth varies across the province

While the provincial picture has improved, economic conditions continue to vary considerably across B.C.

The Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island continue to experience growth below their usual levels, largely reflecting weaker labour market conditions. The Island, in particular, continues to face challenging employment conditions.

Elsewhere in the province, however, there are growing signs of stronger economic activity. Northern B.C. appears to be experiencing particularly strong growth in recent months, following a difficult period in 2025.

Overall, the latest Nowcast figures suggest that B.C.’s economy is gaining momentum heading into the fall, although the pace of recovery remains uneven across regions. The stronger performance in several parts of the province is encouraging, while softer conditions in major population centres and ongoing labour market weakness remain important factors to watch in the months ahead.
