BC Economic Growth Remains Above 2% in August 2026

by Florencio Jr Mende

British Columbia’s economy continued to outperform the national average in August 2026, with year-over-year real GDP growth reaching 2.3% for a second consecutive month. However, preliminary estimates point to a modest slowdown in September, while economic performance continues to vary across the province’s regions.

BC Economy Outpaces National Growth

According to the British Columbia Real Estate Association (BCREA) Nowcast, British Columbia’s real GDP grew by 2.3% year over year in August, maintaining growth above 2% for the second consecutive month.

By comparison, Canada's economy recorded year-over-year real GDP growth of 1.5% over the same period, highlighting BC's stronger economic performance.

Preliminary estimates for September suggest that provincial economic growth eased to 2.1% year over year. Despite this moderation, BC continued to outperform the national economy, where growth was estimated at 1.2%.

These figures suggest that while economic momentum may be moderating, British Columbia's economy remains relatively resilient amid broader economic uncertainty.

Regional Economic Performance Varies Across BC

Economic conditions across British Columbia remain uneven, with different regions experiencing varying levels of growth and labour market challenges.

Lower Mainland: The region appears to be recovering following a sluggish summer, suggesting an improvement in economic momentum as the province moves into the fall.

Vancouver Island: Economic conditions remain challenging, with a weak labour market continuing to weigh on regional performance. This may have implications for household spending, business activity, and the broader housing market.

Interior and Northern BC: Both regions are experiencing slow but positive economic growth. While expansion remains modest, the trend suggests continued economic activity rather than a broad-based contraction.

These regional differences highlight the importance of looking beyond provincial GDP figures when assessing local economic conditions. Employment trends, household finances, and business activity can vary considerably across BC, influencing local real estate markets and broader economic prospects.

Outlook for British Columbia's Economy

British Columbia's economy continues to demonstrate relative strength compared with Canada as a whole. However, the slight moderation in September growth and persistent weakness in some regional labour markets suggest that challenges remain.

The Lower Mainland's apparent rebound offers an encouraging sign, while the Island's weaker labour market warrants continued attention. Meanwhile, the Interior and Northern regions appear to be maintaining modest positive growth.

As the province moves into the final quarter of 2026, economic performance will depend on whether recent growth can be sustained amid broader economic uncertainty. For businesses, households, and real estate market participants, regional economic conditions will remain an important factor in assessing the outlook for employment, consumer confidence, and housing demand.
