Canadian Retail Sales Rise 1.2% in August 2026 Amid Economic Uncertainty

Canadian retail sales increased by 1.2% in August 2026 to $74.6 billion, marking a 5.4% increase compared with August 2025. Core retail sales, which exclude gasoline and automobile-related items, also rose by 1.1% month-over-month. After adjusting for price changes, retail sales volumes increased by 1.2%, indicating continued strength in consumer spending.

In British Columbia, retail sales rose by 2.1% month-over-month and 3.7% year-over-year. The Vancouver Census Metropolitan Area recorded a similar monthly increase of 2.1%, with sales up 2.3% compared with August 2025.

August's results reflect renewed momentum following a slowdown in July, with retail spending increasing in seven of the past eight months. A preliminary estimate of 0.7% growth in September further suggests that household consumption remains resilient heading into the final months of 2026.

However, economic risks remain. While recent economic activity has shown strength, Canada's labour market has weakened significantly, with more than 100,000 jobs lost over the past two months. At the same time, renewed upward pressure on three-month core inflation remains a concern for the Bank of Canada as it weighs the risks facing the economy.

The outlook for interest rates remains uncertain. The current forecast anticipates the Bank of Canada holding its policy rate at 2.25% at its next decision, followed by two rate hikes over the coming months. The timing of any increases will depend largely on the trajectory of core inflation, including potential price pressures associated with ongoing challenges in the oil refining sector.
